Shopper FAQ

USD 383 FIT Closet Guidelines

Purpose

The FIT Closet exists to provide equitable and confidential support to USD 383 students and families in need. To ensure all families can access necessary items, we ask that everyone follows our established shopping guidelines.

General Shopping Guidelines

Each household is welcome to shop once per month and take items based on current posted limits. These limits may vary depending on current inventory and season.

Over-Shopping Policy

In order to serve all FIT Closet families fairly, we ask that shoppers respect the posted item limits and guidance provided by volunteers and staff.

If a shopper routinely exceeds these limits or disregards the guidance of staff or volunteers:

  1. First Instance
    • A gentle, private reminder will be given by a staff member or lead volunteer, clarifying our item limits and the reason behind them.
  2. Second Instance
    • A follow-up conversation will be scheduled to discuss the concern and identify any unmet needs that might be causing the behavior. Our goal is to connect the family with additional resources if needed.
  3. Continued Over-Shopping
    • If the issue persists, the family may be asked to take a temporary break from shopping (e.g., create a shopping list for volunteers to fill) or may be required to schedule appointments only during times when supervision is increased.
Confidentiality & Respect

We handle all concerns privately and respectfully. Our goal is not to shame or exclude anyone, but to ensure the sustainability of the FIT Closet for all who need it.

Support Is Available

If your family has needs beyond what the FIT Closet currently offers, please let us know. We can help connect you with other school and community resources.

At the FIT Closet, our goal is to ensure equitable access for all qualifying USD 383 families. We prioritize supporting students by providing essential resources for their academic success. Due to an increase in families qualifying for our services, shoppers may schedule 1 appointment per month and be mindful of the item limits below.

Item Limits:

For each school-age child in your household, you may take:

  • 3 pairs of pants/shorts
  • 3 shirts
  • 1 dress/skirt
  • 1 jacket or coat
  • 1 pair of shoes

For each non-school-age member of your household, you may take:

  • 3 pair of pants/shorts
  • 3 shirts
  • 1 dress/skirt
  • 1 jacket or coat

  • To qualify, you must have a student enrolled in a USD 383 school who qualifies for free or reduced fees.

  • Shopping is by appointment only, with each shopper allowed to visit the FIT Closet once per calendar month. Appointments can be scheduled or rescheduled via the ParentSquare app.

  • If you are unable to attend your appointment, please reschedule or cancel it in the app beforehand. If you miss your appointment, you will need to contact us directly to arrange a new time.

  • If you cannot find a suitable appointment or miss your scheduled time, please us an email. We can prepare needed items for your student for pick-up at the FIT Closet or at your child’s school.

  • ParentSquare will only attach one student's name to your appointment. We understand that when you shop, it’s for your entire family, not just that student.

  • Shopping is free of charge; all items have been generously donated.

  • The FIT Closet is located at 901 Poyntz Ave. Please park behind the building (south side) off 10th Street and enter through door #5. The FIT Closet is just inside that door on the right.

  • We ask that you primarily shop for the school-age children in your household. While we understand that other family members may have clothing needs, we may not always be able to accommodate them.

  • During your FIT Closet appointment, you will receive 3 pairs of socks and 3 pairs of underwear for each school-age child in your household. *Currently, we are unable to provide new socks or underwear for adult family members.

  • The FIT Closet primarily focuses on the needs of qualifying school-age children. If we cannot accommodate other family members’ needs, we can refer you to additional organizations in Manhattan.
